Braille Transcriptionist

Department: Multiple

Pay Grade: U112

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

GENERAL PURPOSE

This position performs responsible human support and Braille transcription activities to assist the work of teachers who instruct visually impaired students and classroom teachers. Work is performed under immediate supervision.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
  • Transcribes classroom and supplementary materials into Braille for visually impaired students and vision teacher(s).
  • Delivers materials to appropriate schools when necessary.
  • Proofreads and edits all Braille materials produced.
  • Operates a variety of equipment (computer, scanner, embosser, copy machine, Braille writer) common to a visually impaired program.
  • Coordinates with vision and classroom teachers to prepare transcribed materials for the current and upcoming student needs.
  • Maintains accurate records of all transcriptions and a properly labeled disk file on all materials.
  • Enlarges materials (including tests) for visually impaired students.
  • Collates and binds Braille materials.
  • Interlines students' Braille materials for teachers to read and correct.
  • Assists with packaging, storing, and maintaining the library of specialized vision materials.
  • Maintains an inventory of supplies needed and assists in ordering necessary materials to complete job responsibilities.
  • Attends meetings in which educational programs for visually impaired students are planned and materials/equipment are reviewed.
  • Performs other related duties as required/assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or its equivalent.
  • At least one year of experience in the operation of Braille typing equipment.
  • Certification as a Braille transcriber preferred.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Knowledge of correct English usage, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of the Braille alphabet and Braille transcription programs.
  • Knowledge of the practices, methods, and techniques of assisting a visually impaired person.
  • Ability to maintain confidential files and information and to compile reports.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with students, teachers, parents, and associates.
  • Ability to use classroom and instructional equipment.
WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Work environment is both inside and outside; the worker is exposed to inside and outside environmental conditions and noise.
  • This is light work requiring the exertion of up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects.
  • Work may require stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, and repetitive motions; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; proficiency in operating Braille equipment.
